Impact of Experimental Science Now
We are pleased to welcome a new member to the Stan-X community: Seneca High School, a public high school and one of 15 Academies in the Jefferson County Public School District in Louisville, KY. Experienced and enthusiastic teacher Dr. Erin Brock was so excited after attending the Stan-X Teachers Academy that she reached out to ESN with a request for funds to support her molecular biology lab. She also has received substantial lab resources from the University of Louisville, where she trained.

"As an international student at Philips Exeter, I initially felt quite lost. However, Dr. Chisholm and Ms. Rankin [Exeter teachers] introduced me to your Stan-Ex BIO470 program, which not only sparked my interest in science but also helped me see that such a career path is accessible. I became the first person in my family to attend college and I continued with Drosophila research on muscle dysfunction at Hopkins. Now, I’m pursuing a career as a physician-scientist. I credit much of my passion and direction to the curiosity and confidence instilled by the StanEx program."
Ethel Walker students tackle lofty goal of curing diabetes by researching the humble fruit fly
Accomplishments
It’s not every day that high school students get to research a possible cure for type 1 diabetes. But that’s exactly what students at The Ethel Walker School in Connecticut are doing through a collaboration with Stanford University.
The students work with Stanford’s Seung Kim Lab and are given “the opportunity to have an a-ha moment, a moment of discovery, when they created something that had never been created before,” said Dr. Seung Kim, a physician scientist who runs the lab and has partnerships with 20 high schools around the world.
